Kevin Hart Suffered ‘Major Back Injuries’ in a Car Crash

Comedian Kevin Hart was hospitalized over Labor Day weekend after a car crash when his classic Plymouth Barracuda veered off the road.

A Menace on the Road?

Around one o’clock on Sunday morning, Hart, his friend Jared Black, and Black’s fiancee (as well as Eniko Hart’s personal trainer) Rebecca Broxterman were driving down Mulholland Highway in his 1970 Plymouth Barracuda.

The muscle car, which Hart nicknamed “Menace” was a present to himself on his 40th birthday just last month. Earlier on Saturday, Hart shared a video of himself revving the engine on Instagram Stories. His wife, Eniko, also shared a video of him playing with their young son, Kenzo.

Hart was excited to spend the long weekend at home with family and friends, and he hashtagged his final social media post before the crash #LiveLaughLove.

The Crash

The official police report states that Jared Black was driving the Barracuda and lost control of the car. They do not believe he was under the influence of alcohol at the time. The car veered off the road, smashed through a wooden fence, and then rolled down a 30-foot embankment.

In a video obtained by TMZ, you can see how the classic car was almost completely destroyed in the wreck. The front end and side panels are crushed, and the roof and hood of the car have been completely torn off. Vintage vehicles like “Menace” often lack modern safety features, so they aren’t necessarily the safest choice.

Kevin Hart Tries to Get Help

Despite the destruction–and his injuries–Hart heroically sought help for his friends, who were both pinned in the car. Black was later airlifted to the UCLA Medical Center, while Broxterman had only minor injuries. The fire crew who responded to the accident reportedly had to use the jaws of life to get Black and Broxterman free of the car.

Hart’s security team showed up in an SUV after the accident, and although he was able to walk away from the crash, he was soon rushed to the hospital. Eniko Hart told reporters that, although the comedian needed surgery, he was “going to be just fine.”

Celebrities Reach Out

Multiple celebrities–including several of Hart’s costars–reached out to offer their support on social media. Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson shared a photo of them on the set of Jumanji with the caption: “Stop messing with my emotions brother … We have a lot more laughing to do together. Love you man. Stay strong.”

Bryan Cranston urged fans to “send him positive energy and healing thoughts.” It sounds like those thoughts are working because Eniko Hart promises her husband is doing great. “He’s good. Everybody’s good, thank God. … He’s fine. He’s awake.” He is expected to make a full recovery.
