From our friends at PopTonic:
The holidays are here for Ed Sheeran fans!
Early Monday morning, the singer-songwriter released his first new song since welcoming his baby girl back in August.
Over the weekend, the Grammy winner teased that something exciting was on the way.
“11 am GMT tomorrow. A Christmas present” he wrote on social media, alongside a piece of brightly-colored artwork. He also changed his Instagram profile pic to the same piece of artwork.
Now, Sheeran has officially dropped the new song, titled “Afterglow,” with an accompanying performance video.
“Hey guys. Afterglow is a song I wrote last year that I wanted to release for you. It’s not the first single from the next album, it’s just a song I love, and hope you love too. Enjoy!” Sheeran wrote on Instagram Monday, posting a clip of the accompanying video.
“Have a safe and happy festive break and New Year’s,” he continued. “Back to dad land for me now, ciao x.”
As fans likely know, Sheeran and his wife, Cherry Seaborn, welcomed their first child together back in August. When the singer-songwriter announced the birth of their daughter in September, he also shared that he would be taking some more time off to be with his family.
“Lots of love and I’ll see you when it’s time to come back, Ed x,” he shared at the time.
Well, it looks like it was finally time for Sheeran to come back!
The new track serves as Sheeran’s first release since his No. 6 Collaborations Project in July 2019. That album featured artists like Justin Bieber, Chance the Rapper, and Cardi B. In October of that year, his longtime manager had said the singer-songwriter was already working on his next project.
“He’s already started writing and recording for what will be album five. We won’t let anything come out that’s substandard,” Stuart Camp told the BBC at the time. “We’ve done that on the previous two albums where we have to keep going until we absolutely know that the thing we come back with is undeniable.”
Even still, Sheeran said that this song is not a track from an upcoming album. So, I’ll be interested to see what else the British musician has been working on behind the scenes. I mean, besides his unlikely pairing with Eminem. Don’t forget, Sheeran was featured on the rapper’s “Those Kinda Nights” from his album released in January, Music to Be Murdered By, as well as in “River” from the album Revival in 2018.
This new song was co-written by Sheeran, along with David Hodges and Fred Gibson (Fred Again). The latter also produced the track together with Sheeran, and co-production is from Parisi.
The accompanying performance video is filmed in one continuous shot.
In the moody song, Sheeran sings, “We were love drunk waiting on a miracle / Trying to find ourselves in the winter snow / So alone in love like the world had disappeared / Oh, I won’t be silent and I won’t let go / I will hold on tighter ‘til the afterglow.”
