Lori Loughlin and husband Mossimo Giannulli are now both behind bars for their role in last year’s college admissions scandal.
But according to a source close to Loughlin, it’s actually the couple’s daughters who are struggling the most: 22-year-old Bella Rose Giannulli, and 21-year-old YouTube star Olivia Jade Giannulli.
“It’s just a nightmare for them,” a source told PEOPLE. “They were very upset when they said goodbye to Lori. But to have both of their parents now in prison at the same time is very upsetting.”
56-year-old Loughlin went first. The Full House star reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Dublin, CA on October 30, after she and hubby Giannulli pleaded guilty earlier this year for their part in the nationwide college admissions scandal. She’s serving two months.
Giannulli, 57, reported to the Federal Correctional Institution in Lompoc, CA two weeks later on November 19. He’ll be serving a five-month sentence.
Loughlin and Giannulli were arrested in March of 2019 after they were accused of paying $500,000 in bribes to ensure their daughters were admitted to the University of Southern California. Oh, and there were all those staged photos that their daughters took part in, too.
They spent a lot of time denying any involvement in the scandal — aptly dubbed “Operation Varsity Blues” — until they changed their tune earlier this year. Come May, they pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire and mail fraud.
Loughlin’s deal, aside from two months behind bars, also includes two years of supervised release with 100 hours of community service. Her designer husband nabbed five months in lockup, with two years of supervised release and 250 hours of community service. Both were also ordered to pay fines totaling $400,000.
The sentencing means that both parents will be in prison for the holiday season. Unless they get released early, Loughlin is set for release on December 30, with Giannulli coming home in May 2021.
I’m sure just having both parents in prison during the holiday season is bad enough. But to make matters worse, Loughlin and Giannulli are serving time amid the coronavirus pandemic. We’ve already seen how COVID-19 can spread like wildfire within close quarters of other prisons.
“They are beyond worried,” the inside source said of Olivia Jade and Bella Rose.
The insider continued, “They can’t wait to have their mom home in December, though. They try to focus on this.”
So far, though, it looks like at least Loughlin is doing well and staying healthy in federal prison, with sources saying she is currently “healthy.”
“The other women are happy Lori is there because officials are taking COVID-19 seriously with a high-profile inmate,” a source explained. “It would be horrible PR if Lori got COVID-19 and got really sick.”
