Julie Andrews has had a long and successful career in Hollywood, starring in some of the most iconic films of her time, including The Sound of Music and Mary Poppins. If you only know Andrews from these wholesome films, buckle up – you’re about to be shocked!
Julie, 85, went on Ellen this week and dished about filming group love scenes in a movie her husband was directing. The word she used to describe the experience? “Adorable.”
“So sweet… it was adorable,” the octagenarian actress said.
Y’all, Julie Andrews is wild.
Andrews was on Ellen this week to promote her memoir, titled Home Work. The book seems to be really dishy, as far as we can tell, and goes into her life in Hollywood, the parties she and her husband attended, and how she felt like her career was often out of her control.
In one chapter she talks about a dinner party she and her husband, Blake Edwards, attended in 1971 that had people doing lines of drugs for dessert and fellow party-goers pressuring the Mary Poppins star to partake.
“The peer pressure was intense,” she admitted. Her husband stood up for her, though. “She doesn’t need any of that stuff. She’s high enough on life as it is.”
Of all the big names in Hollywood, Julie Andrews has never been one to have rumors of being an opiate addict or going to the best drug rehab clinic. She is open about her depression treatment and the many times she went to therapy during her life, which she says made her a better mother and wife.
Home Work is co-published with her daughter, Emma Walton Hamilton, and covers the time frame between her taking her role as Mary Poppins in 1964 to her performance in the movie Victor/Victoria in 1982.
The movie 10, directed by husband Blake Edwards and starring Andrews, along with Dudley Moore and Robert Webber, was when she and her husband shared a special moment as he was filming a raunchy scene.
She wasn’t on set that day, but rushed there when Edwards called her and said he had something to share with her. “You’ve just gotta come on over here, it’s an unbelievable sight,” Julie remembers her husband saying.
When she got on set, she discovered multiple actors completely nude, walking around as if it was a normal day for them!
According to Andrews, Edwards was able to get several “experts” in the field to join the cast, making the scene much more authentic and natural feeling.
Andrews can specifically recall a moment where Dudley Moore was lounging in the middle of all of these nude actors.
“And there was sweet Dudley in the middle of it all and he wasn’t very, very tall. Blake put him between two enormously statuesque ladies and so he was completely naked and these two ladies were naked, but their bums were up here and little Dudley’s was down there. So sweet.”
That’s not exactly everyone’s idea of “sweet.”
“It was more adorable than anything else because Dudley was so adorable.”
Only Julie Andrews could describe such a scene as “adorable.” What a (literal) dame.
