Talk show host Wendy Williams has had a difficult year. The 54-year-old broke her shoulder, moved into a sober living house, and split from her husband/manager of more than two decades. But the details are so much more dramatic than that!
In March, Wendy revealed that she had been seeking treatment in a sober living house. “I am driven by my 24-hour sober coach back to a home that I live in the tri-state with a bunch of smelly boys who have become my family,” she told the audience of her talk show.
Wendy has struggled in the past with cocaine addiction. She freely admits that “drugs were a demon [she] had to overcome” in her early career.
She also suffered a fractured shoulder this year, as well as an ongoing battle with Grave’s disease. The Wendy Williams Show went on hiatus for several months while she recovered physically and mentally. But there were more challenges to come.
While all this was going on, Wendy also found out that her husband, Kevin Hunter (46), had fathered a child with his long-time mistress. Rumors had swirled around their marriage for years–hints of infidelity as well as emotional and physical abuse.
Wendy actually hired a private detective to confirm that her husband’s mistress had given birth to his baby. When she had that proof in hand, she immediately divorced him. Although the couple had insisted for months that there were no issues with the relationship, it seems as though one of them was lying.
It wasn’t the first time she’d caught him cheating. When their son was just a month old, Wendy overheard him talking dirty to another woman on the phone. She forgave him then, and she forgave him when a former employee of Wendy’s radio show accused Hunter of sexual harassment. The same woman claimed that she had seen Hunter choke and threaten Wendy in 2008.
This might be the most dramatic part of the sad story. During her hiatus from The Wendy Williams Show, someone from her production called the police to report that Kevin was allegedly poisoning his wife.
Police officers arrived at her house to perform a wellness check on Wendy. TMZ reported that Hunter initially didn’t want to let the officers inside, and that when they finally were able to see Wendy, he didn’t want to leave her alone.
They reportedly found Wendy huddled under a blanket, and when they asked if the anonymous tipster was correct, “she became tearful, but denied there was any truth to it. The cops left after Wendy told them once more she was okay.”
Wendy has completely cut Kevin Hunter from her life, not only divorcing him but also firing him as her manager.
“The decision to split was terribly hard for her, but she’s regaining her health. She decided she needed to finally put herself first,” an anonymous source told People. It sounds like she’s coping with the drama as best as she can.
Wendy has promised to focus on being there for her 19-year-old son and taking care of her health.
