Will Smith and his wife Jada Pinkett Smith were so concerned about their son’s health that they staged an intervention.
Jaden Smith, the 21-year-old musician and philanthropist, had started to show physical signs of declining health, prompting concern from his parents and the rest of his family. That’s when Will and Jada knew that they needed to step in and do something about it.
Jaden’s intervention was the topic of discussion on an episode of the Facebook Watch series Red Table Talk, a talk show hosted by Jada that regularly features the rest of the family as well. Now in its second season, the latest episode brought in the entire Smith clan, including Jada, Will, Willow, Jaden, Will’s son Trey from a previous relationship, and Jada’s mother Adrienne Banfield-Norris, in an effort to deal with Jaden’s declining health.
In what Jada says is a first, Will called the entire family to a mandatory emergency meeting. As they began, Will thanks the group for attending the “first ever emergency red table.” They then establish what they call a “Circle of Safety,” something that they’ve been doing as a family since 2008, before they move to the table for the official meeting.
Will opens the discussion by talking about his previous diet problems while they were on vacation, which caused him to gain weight and struggle with his blood pressure. He revealed that the whole ordeal made him think more seriously about his health and diet.
As the roundtable discussion turned to nutrition, specifically on eating to feel good and be healthy, Jada revealed that Will was not the only family member who needed help.
Jada admits that the family needed to stage an intervention to help Jaden because he was wasting away. “He just looked drained, he was just depleted,” she said about Jaden. She knew that he wasn’t getting the vitamins and nutrients he needed after switching to a vegan diet.
Will added that he “had the dark circles under his eyes” and that Jaden had “a little greyness to his skin.”
Despite his dedication to being vegan, Jaden admitted that his diet had gotten offtrack and his health was poor. While touring in Australia, dizzy spells and nausea sent him to the hospital. When talking about his health, he confessed, “I wasn’t looking good, I wasn’t feeling good, I wasn’t sleeping.”
When not done properly, a strict vegan diet can leave individuals malnourished, underweight, and generally in poor health.
Jaden Smith is now doing much better, health-wise, and is being more mindful about his health. He has since switched from his strict vegan diet to a vegetarian diet, and is working to eat a more balanced variety of foods.
