Brad Pitt Credits Bradley Cooper for His Sobriety

It’s no surprise to anyone that drug and alcohol abuse is rampant in Hollywood. It makes sense. You put a bunch of powerful, very rich, and very egotistical people together, give them unlimited access to basically everything… healthy people don’t normally stay healthy for long.

While accepting an award this week, Brad Pitt gave a big hug to Bradley Cooper and told him how much he appreciated and loved the actor. Why? Because apparently, Pitt recently got sober––not because of his divorce or to connect with his many children, but because of Cooper.

Interesting.

Pitt Didn’t Even Know What Award He Was Winning

Pitt and Cooper were on stage together because Pitt was accepting the ‘Best Supporting Actor’ award at the ‘National Board of Review Annual Awards Gala.’ If you don’t know who these people are, don’t feel bad – neither did Pitt.

Seriously, a good chunk of his very short speech was expressing how surprised he was to win the award, and how he had never heard of the organization before. But “they like movies,” according to Pitt, and that’s all that matters.

He got the award for his role in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, a Quentin Tarantino film that came out in July of last year. It pulled over $370 million at the box office, which considering the $90 million budget, is pretty solid.

This is a potato-quality clip of Brad’s acceptance speech posted by a Twitter user. Listen closely – he thanks Cooper early on, while the crowd is still clapping.

His exact words on Cooper were, “He’s a sweetheart. I got sober because of this guy and every day has been happier since. I love you, and thank you.”

Pitt’s Sobriety Problems

In September of last year, Pitt opened up about his very public (and sometimes messy) divorce from Angelina Jolie and choosing to get sober after their separation.

Apparently, Pitt stopped drinking following the divorce and spent about a year and a half attending Alcoholics Anonymous meetings. Can you imagine walking into an AA meeting and having Brad freakin’ Pitt in the audience, listening to your story?!

“You had all these men sitting around being open and honest in a way I have never heard,” he spoke of his experience. “It was this safe space where there was little judgment, and therefore little judgment of yourself.”

Does Pitt Like Being a Dad?

People get sober for a variety of reasons, and I’m not here to judge. But Brad Pitt is the father to six children with ex Jolie, and not one of them got a mention on stage.

Pitt did talk about going to therapy in the same interview in which he opened up about his sobriety, and mentioned that “kids are everything,” but… nothing specific, at all. Is this an attempt to protect his kid’s privacy, or is he really just not that into being a dad?

Cooper has occasionally spoken on his own journey of alcohol abuse, addiction, depression and eventual recovery. He says that his goal is to embrace who he is “to the fullest extent,” and whatever happens, happens.

Healthy outlook, for sure. Hopefully, Pitt continues his journey with sobriety.
