Sasha Obama turns 19 today! The daughter of Barack and Michelle stays out of the spotlight for the most part, but she’s been up to quite a bit since her dad left the White House.
Sasha graduated from her high school, Sidwell Friends, in 2019. In fall of 2019, she began attending the University of Michigan. Of course, the pandemic put a wrench in Sasha’s college life the same way it did for all other students.
Sasha’s older sister, Malia, has been attending Harvard University since 2017.
In a 2018 interview with TODAY’s Jenna Bush Hager, Michelle Obama said of her daughters, “You want them to be able to have wonderful experiences privately and you want them to be able to fail and stumble privately, like any other kids. And when they’re not allowed to do that, it’s unfair and you feel guilty about it, you know, because they didn’t choose this life.”
When the Obamas moved into the White House, Michelle had to make sure the staff didn’t let Sasha and Malia grow up too spoiled.
“I also had to beg the housekeepers, ‘These girls need to learn how to clean their own rooms and make their beds and do their laundry. You cannot do this every day because they will not live here forever, and I am not raising kids who don’t know how to make a bed.'”
In Michelle’s Netflix documentary, “Becoming,” Sasha speaks some beautiful words about her mother:
“I’m excited for her to be proud of what she’s done, because I think that’s the most important thing for a human to do is be proud of themselves.”
Since they’re so hidden from the spotlight, most people don’t know much about Sasha or her sister, Malia. However, we do know a bit.
For starters, here’s a fun fact: Sasha’s full name is actually Natasha. How pretty!
Sasha was only seven years old when her dad became the President of the United States in 2008. She was one of the youngest residents of the White House in American history.
In 2016, she got to meet Ryan Reynolds – her self-admitted celeb crush!
As she enters young adulthood, we are so excited to see where Sasha goes next. She’s been an icon ever since she infamously yawned at one of her father’s last speeches in the political sphere. We hope your 19th birthday is the best one yet, Sasha!
