Heath Ledger Hated Brokeback Mountain Jokes, Reveals Gyllenhaal

When Brokeback Mountain was released in 2005, it instantly became a subject of controversy.  The famous film was focused on how two cowboys found love in 1963, despite the fact that society at that time definitely wouldn’t approve of their relationship.

Jake Gyllenhaal Speaks Out

After the movie was released, people of course started talking and also made jokes. Lots of jokes. One of the most popular involved a line in the film that says, “I wish I knew how to quit you.”  Gyllenhaal made a confession during an interview on The Today Show that revealed that his co-star, Health Ledger, really didn’t enjoy those jokes at the story’s expense.

Gyllenhaal said, “I see people who have joked with me or criticized me about lines I say in the movie, and that’s the thing I loved about Heath.  He would never joke.  Someone wanted to make a joke about the story or whatever, and he was like, ‘No, this is about love.’ Like, that’s it, man. Like, no.'”

Jake also discussed how the film really made an impact on his entire film career.  He said, “It opened tons of doors.  It was crazy.  It was amazing.  It’s defined my career in different ways.”  He also discussed how the film was so much bigger than himself, and how it served an important purpose.

He said, “[The film is] bigger than me. It has become not ours anymore. It’s the world’s.”

Brokeback Controversy

When an actor first starts out, whether it be through online classes, online schools or through other courses of study, they probably don’t realize how much of an impact their career choice might have on both themselves and others – or how they might change society’s views, or how tough it might be to face the general public when playing an especially controversial role.

Even in the film itself, the actors had to play the part of two men who were not accepted by society, who had to painfully hide their love throughout the 20 years that spanned during the film.  It is films like this that can truly make a difference for future generations.

In the past, this kind of controversy has led some to resort to drug and alcohol treatment centers, but as the general public becomes more open-minded, perhaps it can lead to society becoming more accepting as a whole.
