With Illumination on track to release a new Super Mario Bros. movie in 2022, many are wondering what the characters might look like.
Nintendo is famously protective of its characters after the disastrous 1993 live-action movie that featured the Mario brothers, although that film did eventually achieve cult status.
In an interview with Famitsu, Shigeru Miyamoto, who is signed on to produce the new animated Super Mario Bros movie, recalled a meeting with Chris Meledandri, the CEO of Illumination.
There was one thing about Meledandri that earned Miyamoto’s trust in him: his past failures.
“When we started our partnership with Universal, I heard that the CEO of Illumination, Chris Meledandri, wanted to meet with me,” said Miyamoto.
“I didn’t know what kind of angle he was getting at, but I’ll never forget when he talked to me about why he had failed before.”
It was Meledandri’s willingness to talk about and accept his past failures that convinced Miyamoto that Nintendo could work well with Illumination.
According to a joint survey recently conducted by Morning Consult and The Hollywood Reporter, the video game film that audiences want to see the most was overwhelmingly Super Mario Bros.
And they might just get what they’re been asking for.
Although the animated version is already in the works, it now sounds like Universal is eyeing Brie Larson for the role of Princess Peach in yet another Super Mario Bros. movie.
Princess Peach is easily one of the most recognizable and beloved characters in the Mushroom Kingdom. Would Brie Larson be able to pull off such an iconic character? Apexform on Twitter decided to take the challenge to task, and created fanart to show how Larson might appear in the role.

The image isn’t entirely accurate to the video game character, but it shows how Larson could look as Princess Peach if the movie came to fruition.
So, why is Super Mario Bros. getting so much attention this year? It might be because 2020 marks the 35th anniversary of the Nintendo franchise, and Nintendo is reportedly planning to remaster some of the biggest games for Nintendo Switch.
Universal has also partnered up with Nintendo to launch upcoming theme parks that feature Super Mario World. Nintendo also recently revealed new details on a partnership with LEGO.
If Universal does create a live-action Super Mario Bros. film, we hope they finally do justice to the beloved franchise.
In the meantime, people will have to make do with Nintendo’s most recent release—Animal Crossing, while hoping their 5g cellular network holds up to the task.
