Tom Hanks and Rita Wilson have been released from a Queensland hospital in Australia, after being diagnosed with novel coronavirus last week.
The couple are now in self-quarantine at their home there, according to an Instagram video posted by son Chet Hanks. It has been confirmed by a representative for Hanks.
Hanks and Wilson are in Australia for a biopic about singer Elvis Presley, which has been in pre-production. In the film, directed by Baz Luhrmann, Hanks has been cast to play Presley’s manager, Colonel Tom Parker.
The production is now currently suspended after Hanks’ coronavirus diagnosis, which of course he needed immediate treatment for. Flu symptoms in any other situation wouldn’t normally shut down a whole film, but in light of the coronavirus pandemic, everyone is being extra careful.
“The health and safety of our company members is always our top priority and we are taking precautions to protect everyone who works on our productions around the world,” Warner Bros. said in a statement.
The Mr. Rogers actor initially announced his diagnosis on Instagram last Thursday.
“We felt a bit tired, like we had colds and some body aches. Rita had some chills that came and went. Slight fevers too,” Hanks told his followers. “To play things right, as is needed in the world right now, we were tested for the Coronavirus, and were found to be positive.”
He continued, “The Medical Officials have protocols that must be followed. We Hanks’ will be tested, observed, and isolated for as long as public health and safety requires.”
Since then, Hanks and Wilson had been hospitalized in isolation, where they were observed and given flu symptom relief. Keeping true to their word, the couple shared updates with their fans while in the hospital.
Hanks shared updates on their care and ongoing recovery, thanking those “Down Under” for taking such good care of him and his wife. He also told fans that they are staying in isolation to prevent spreading it to others “for whom it could lead to a very serious illness.”
Wilson also put together a playlist for others who are self-isolating or in quarantine, and aptly named the playlist “Quarantunes.” It features songs like The Beatles’ “I’m So Tired” and MC Hammer’s “U Can’t Touch This.”
But now, the two have left the Gold Coast University Hospital, and are now self-quarantining in their rented Queensland home. They will likely remain in isolation for several more weeks, at least.
Australia currently has 377 confirmed cases of the coronavirus, and three deaths. There are a few things you can do as we wait for this virus to slow to a natural stop. Smoking aids anxiety, but don’t go overboard – sharing vapes and cigarettes is a sure way to transfer germs. Also, it can’t be said enough: wash your hands for far longer than you think you have to. Stay away from other people. Together, we can beat this!
