Nicki Minaj’s husband has a troubled past, and it seems like that past has come back for him.
Kenneth Petty surrendered to federal authorities after failing to register as a sex offender.
The United States Attorney’s Office of Los Angeles has confirmed that Petty was taken into federal custody on Wednesday. He faced a judge later that day, where he pled not guilty and was released after he posted the $100,000 bond.
Court documents filed on February 25 show that Petty was indicted by a grand jury for failure to register as a sex offender — something that he needed to do when he moved to California, but apparently failed to. If convicted on the federal charge, he faces up to 10 years in prison.
He moved to Los Angeles County from New York back in July 2019, which was around the same time that he and Nicki Minaj hit up the Beverly Hills Courthouse to get a marriage license.
But it wasn’t long after the couple’s move that Petty first found himself in trouble with the law.
On November 15, police in Beverly Hills pulled Petty over. During the traffic stop, they discovered that he was a registered sex offender in New York state. They also learned he had not registered in California, as is legally required.
At that time, Petty was arrested, but released on a $20,000 bond, and the Los Angeles County D.A. charged him for failing to register in the state of California.
However, it looks like Petty didn’t follow up after that and do what he was supposed to, because now the feds are involved.
After appearing in court and pleading not guilty yesterday, Petty is out on bond. He will be under pretrial supervision and has already surrendered his passport. He cannot leave Southern California. Supposedly, officials have also given him a curfew.
Prosecutors originally wanted to place Petty on house arrest, but after seeking lawyer advice, Petty managed to get himself an ankle monitor instead.
As part of his pretrial supervision, he is also not allowed to use any drugs. That means not even marijuana from legal dispensaries in California is okay.
Nicki Minaj and Kenneth Petty began dating back in late 2018, which is when we all first learned about just how sketchy her man really is. But for the record, Minaj has defended him against the haters. She claims that both parties involved were teens at the time (as if that makes it any better): “He was 15, she was 16… in a relationship. But go awf Internet. y’all can’t run my life. Y’all can’t even run y’all own life. Thank you boo.”
Petty, who reportedly has 5 kids, has a rap sheet that includes a 1995 conviction for first-degree attempted rape. For that, he served almost 4 years in a NY state prison. Officials also ordered him to register as a sex offender.
Petty served more time behind bars after that. He was charged with second-degree murder, but struck a plea deal that dropped the charge to manslaughter. He was released in 2013, after serving 7 years.
