Country music legend Garth Brooks came under fire for a photo he posted of himself, but not for reasons you might guess.
The photo was from backstage at his packed show Saturday night in Detroit, Michigan, and shows the star from behind waiting to go onstage.
The outrage, though, came from confused fans everywhere who didn’t like what Brooks was wearing.
Since he was in Detroit, Brooks decided to wear the number 20 jersey of former Detroit Lions running back Barry Sanders. Sanders is a football legend in the city, and also a NFL Hall of Famer.
The country legend is apparently a fan of Sanders. During the packed concert, Brooks paid tribute to the retired NFL pro, telling his audience of 70,000 fans, “Can I just tell you that you guys got the greatest player in NFL history, in my opinion.”
“He’s also one of the greatest human beings that you’ll ever get to witness or be with,” Brooks continued. “It’s an honor to wear this jersey tonight.”
Brooks posted a photo of himself wearing the Barry Sanders jersey on Instagram in an effort to show his appreciation to fans in Detroit, writing, “Detroit You carried me all night long But you always have I’m in love with you! love, g.”

However, some confused social media users started lashing out at the country star after seeing the photo.
It seems that the misguided outrage came from social media users that either don’t know who former NFL running back Barry Sanders is, or maybe are just wearing their political blinders a little too tight.
“Good grief,” someone posted. “Can’t you just do what you get paid to do ???? Why why why does it have to involve politics !!! So sad. We don’t pay good money for anything other than to watch you perform. [angry emoji face] Thought you were different.”
Clearly, the Barry Sanders jersey was confused for some sort of Bernie Sanders shirt.
“If this is for Bernie Sanders, I’m done with you,” another user wrote. “I thought you were a true American that loves Our Country?”
Bernie Sanders supporters also chimed in, saying things like “Love the Sanders jersey! Feel the Bern!” and “Looks like [Garth] just became my favorite country singer!”
Of course, there were plenty of other fans who chimed in to clear up the confusion and do a little reputation management on behalf of Brooks.
“I’m going out on a limb here… he’s a football fan and it’s a Barry Sanders jersey,” one person wrote. “CRAZY I know.”
