Shannen Doherty has revealed the struggle that she’s been keeping private: her breast cancer has returned.
It has been nearly three years since the 48-year-old 90210 star announced that she had gone into remission, after having been diagnosed with breast cancer in February 2015.
But now, Shannen is sharing a heartbreaking health update.
“It’s going to come out in a matter of days or a week that I’m stage 4,” Shannen told ABC News’ Amy Robach in an interview.
“So my cancer came back and that’s why I’m here. I don’t think I’ve processed it. It’s a bitter pill to swallow in a lot of ways.”
During the interview, which aired on Tuesday’s Good Morning America, Shannen revealed that she was already living with the news while preparing to film the Beverly Hills, 90210 reboot, BH90210. However, she decided to privately battle the disease for more than a year before revealing her diagnosis publicly.
The reason she didn’t disclose her diagnosis? Shannen wanted to prove that she was still able to work.
“I thought when I finally do come out, I would have worked and worked 16 hours a day, and people can look at that and say, ‘Oh my god, she can work and other people with stage 4 can work,'” Shannen said. “Our life doesn’t end the minute we get that diagnosis. We still have some living to do.”
Although she did keep the diagnosis from the public, she did tell a few people, including co-star Brian Austen Green. He helped her get through the grueling filming schedule and gave her a shoulder to lean on.
Shannen’s news comes amid an ongoing lawsuit with her insurance company over damages to her home in the 2018 L.A. wildfires. The court documents will detail her health issues, so Shannen decided to come forward with the news herself.
“I’d rather people hear it from me,” Shannen says of her decision. “I want it to be real and authentic. I want to control the narrative. I want people to know from me.”
