Bachelor Nation is mourning the loss of former contestant Tyler Gwozdz.
The Bachelorette reality star passed away on Wednesday, January 22 from a suspected drug overdose. He was only 29 years old.
His death was confirmed by the show’s producers, who said in a statement, “We are heartbroken to hear the tragic news of Tyler’s passing today. Our thoughts are with the Gwozdz family and his friends.”
According to the Boca Raton Police Services Department, officers and paramedics responded to a 911 call for a possible drug overdose at around 10:45 am on January 13. After arriving, they transported Tyler to a hospital, where he was admitted to the intensive care unit.
Although the official cause OD has not been released, TMZ reports that in the 911 call, a woman told dispatchers that she suspected he was suffering a heroin overdose. Tyler had locked himself in a bathroom, and the caller was frantically trying to get inside to him.
He remained in the hospital for over a week, where he was listed in critical but stable condition. However, he ended up passing away while there. Online records list his date of death as January 22.
Tyler appeared on season 15 of The Bachelorette, where he competed for Hannah Brown last year. He quickly became a fan favorite and secured the first one-on-one date with Hannah. And although he earned himself a rose, he left abruptly during the third episode.
His removal from the show was left a mystery, as his exit was never explained beyond Hannah telling the other contestants that Tyler “had to leave.”
At the time, Tyler stated that it “was a decision that I came to with producers” and was the “best decision that could’ve been made.” He claimed that his actual exit wasn’t aired out of respect for his privacy.
Even though his time on the show was short-lived, this former contestant made a lasting impression.
“It was truly sad to hear the news. He was a good friend and having him as a bunk mate on the show was unforgettable,” Tyler’s friend, Daron Blaylock said. “He will be missed and prayers out to his family.”
“He was a great friend and showed all of us in the house nothing but respect and he will be missed,” said Garrett Powell, another season 15 contestant.
Hannah Brown has yet to comment.
