Breakups are hard. The tears. The drama. Figuring out how to get your stuff from his place even though you know he’s got a new girl there who you don’t really want to see but also you want to look at her so you can talk about her to your girlfriends later…
Wait, just me?
Anyway, 2019 saw some serious relationship shakeups. As we enter into 2020 with a (relatively) clean slate, here’s some of the biggest relationship splits we saw this year.
Does true love not exist anymore?
I always assumed that Geoffrey Arend was really, really funny, because wow, did he pull out of his league. He and Christina Hendricks had been married for a decade when they announced on social media that they would be making the split.

Hendricks is best known for her work on Mad Men, though she has countless other credits to her name, including the new TV show Good Girls, which was just renewed for a third season.
Okay, you might have known about this one, but it still bears mention. While no one is suggesting these two had the romance of the decade, they were together long enough – well over a year – and seemed so solid, I thought they might actually go the distance.
Instead, they announced their split in October and their dedication to raising their daughter, Stormi, together. There are still rumors they could reunite, but I’m not holding my breath.
Yes, the Sandra Lee, of Food Network fame. She and New York Governor Andrew Cuomo had been in a relationship since 2005, though the two weren’t married.
In September, they announced that despite their 14 years together, it was time to part ways. They said the relationship had turned into a “deep friendship,” but wasn’t romantic anymore.
What I want to know is this: is that what happened with his first wife, who he separated from in 2005… the same year he got with Lee?
Just saying.
Maybe that’s mean, but you know it’s true; Miley Cyrus has been in the media a lot in the past few months for her relationship drama.
First it was her very public, very dramatic split from her husband of just a few months, Liam Hemsworth. We learned the two split after pictures of Cyrus lounging on a boat and kissing a woman were leaked.
That woman was Kaitlynn Carter, who Cyrus went on to have a very public relationship with. They were only together for a short time (like, less-than-two-months short), but it was apparently steamy and exciting. It didn’t last, but then again, rebounds rarely do.
Cyrus is again publicly dating someone else, and honestly, I can’t even keep up at this point. Girl, focus on yourself for a hot second.
Quirky Zooey and her husband, Jacob Pechenik, called it quits this year after four years of marriage and two kids.
There’s not a whole lot about their split available – apparently, it just didn’t work out. But no nasty rumors about custody battles have surfaced, so we hope for the kid’s sake they’re making the split as easy as possible.
This one hurt my heart. I’ve been rooting for Katie Holmes to find happiness ever since she split with Tom Cruise, and I thought her weird, secretive relationship with Jamie Foxx was how she was going to find it.
I guess not.
The two never officially confirmed they were dating, despite being rumored to have been together since 2013. They were Hollywood’s “worst-kept secret.”
Foxx has since been spotted with numerous different women, all much younger than Holmes (ouch), and Holmes is living her best life in NYC with her daughter.
Another one bites the dust for Pamela Anderson, who announced her separation from French soccer player Adil Rami in June of this year.
We joke, but in her post, Anderson suggested that Rami was actually abusive to her, and outright said that he was cheating on her with at least one other woman. “He is the monster. How could I have helped so many people [@ndvhofficial] and not be wise enough or able to help myself?”
That tag? The National Domestic Violence Hotline’s official Instagram page.
Yikes.
We hope 2020 brings happiness and peace to Anderson’s life.
This one has all sorts of drama attached to it, too. Cooper and supermodel Shayk had been together since 2015 and even had a kid in 2017. But when A Star is Born was filming, rumors starting circulating about Lady Gaga and Cooper hooking up.
Apparently, it was all a publicity stunt to get more attention to the movie, but Cooper and Shayk split this year after rumors hit their peak, so… you never know.
The two never married, and they seem committed to raising their daughter together.
Oh man, this was a good one. Cage had been rumored to be dating Koike, who he met at a restaurant she worked at, for quite a while. Apparently he got “very drunk” in Vegas one night and agreed to marry her.
So, he did just that.
The couple filed to annul the marriage just days after saying “I do,” and the situation was final three months later. Cage seems like a weird dude, so this news didn’t really surprise anyone.
This is an on-again, off-again relationship we might see resurface sometime in 2020. Meg Ryan and John Mellencamp have been romantically involved since 2011, but have broken up at least twice during that time period.
Once in 2014, and again in 2015.
This time they were engaged, but they split up in November. I’d put money on them being connected in at least some way in the next twelve months. Some people thrive on that toxic, back-and-forth style of relationships.
Yes, I know – your favorite celebrity split might not be on this list. 2019 was a hard year for a lot of things, including love.
We’ve tried to capture the best, most dramatic, most confusing relationship blow-ups, but this is our official 2019 apology if we missed your favorite messy divorce!
