You’re the one that I want! Or, the one Olivia Newton-John wants, anyway. In November, the signature black jacket that Olivia Newton-John wore at the end of Grease went up for auction and fetched over $240,000.
The buyer, who chooses to stay anonymous, then gave the jacket to its “rightful owner,” Newton-John. Who pays almost a quarter of a million dollars for a piece of movie history and just gives it away?!
Apparently, some self-described billionaire.
The scene at the end of Grease is one we all know and love. Olivia Newton-John stands powerfully in her leather jacket (and the pants her costume crew had to hand-stitch her into), her blonde hair in tight curls as a cigarette hangs out of her mouth.
The black leather jacket, along with the pants, went to auction in November of this year. The pants sold for $162,500, while the jacket went for a staggering $243,200. That’s $405,700 total – an impressive sum for the outfit.
The auction was for a good cause: the proceeds went toward the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre in Australia. Newton-John, just 71, is currently fighting cancer for the third time.
“I’ve realized over the years, especially when you go through stuff, that stuff isn’t what’s important,” Newton-John told The Guardian. She gathered over 500 items to sell at the auction, including her original script for Grease and a custom-made Pink Ladies coat.
The buyer of the black leather jacket was kept anonymous by request, but has since returned the jacket to its “rightful owner:” Sandy Olsson, of course.
A video of the exchange was released, though the original buyer’s face is blurred. In it, Newton-John has her eyes closed as the mystery man presents her with a bright pink present.
“Has it got four legs? Is it fluffy?” She asks him, clearly expecting a puppy. Instead, he hands her the box.
The man replies, “The odds of beating a recurrent cancer using the newest emergent therapies is 1,000-fold greater than someone appearing out of the blue, buying your most famous and cherished icon and returning it to you, which is what I’m going to do right now.”
“It should not sit in a billionaire’s closest for country club grabbing rights. For this reason I humbly and respectfully return it to its rightful owner, which is you,” he continues.
The video ends with the man–whose identity may never be known–asking Newton-John if she would display the jacket in her cancer research center.
“Yes,” she jumps to answer. “It was always my dream to do that, so yes!”
This is such a blessing to Newton-John, who is currently battling stage 4 breast cancer. Her first scare was in 1992 when she fought breast cancer the first time, and in 2013 doctors found a tumor in her shoulder.
Despite her health concerns, she believes that every day is a “gift,” and has said she is a “long way away” from dying, which we’re all happy to hear.
We hope the original Sandy has a long time ahead of her to enjoy that iconic jacket and raise more money for her charity.
