Can you imagine the Spice Girls with any other lineup? It turns out Melanie Chisholm–aka Mel C., aka Sporty Spice–almost wasn’t a part of the British mega group!
In a recent interview Mel reveals that she and Victoria Beckham (Posh Spice) were not friends. In fact, an incident at the 1996 Brit Awards almost took the singer out of the band before they even got started.
After a few drinks, Mel C. had some choice words for Posh. Victoria was so upset over her bandmate’s actions that she made clear if it ever happened again, Sporty Spice would have to go.
At the time Mel C. was suffering from severe depression and an eating disorder. She spent much of her time alone worrying about eating in front of others and working out three hours a day to keep her slim figure.
The depression, she assumed, came with the territory of being one of the most famous people in the world. The feelings intensified after striking out on her own and trying to make something of a solo career.
It probably didn’t help that during that time, the singer alleges she was bullied by Mel B. (Scary Spice). While originally not wanting to name names, Mel C. has come forward to say that being a part of the group was one of the darkest times of her life.
Coming from what she describes as a “really quiet household,” being in a wildly famous group and touring the world was a big change of pace. She learned to keep her head down and do her best to avoid any sort of confrontation.
Now, at forty-five years old, the singer admits that it has been hard to be body positive as she continues to make music. While she now has a better handle on positivity, she regrets the years she spent being anti-social.
With a successful solo career and a ten-year-old daughter, things are looking up for the former Spice Girl. She’s focused on loving herself and being a strong role model this go-round.
