It has been four months since we caught the first glimpse of Tom Hooper’s terrifying film adaptation of Cats. Are you ready to see the second trailer that was just released?
The first trailer came out July, giving us all our first taste of the strange half-human half-cat hybrids that fill the new adaptation of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s famous musical. The film features a ton of Hollywood A-listers. I’m talking about Taylor Swift, Idris Elba, Jennifer Hudson, Judi Dench, Rebel Wilson, Jason Derulo, and Ian McKellen.
Well, I don’t know about that. It’s at least safe to say that the release of the first trailer certainly lit the internet on fire with chatter about the movie. It just wasn’t really nice chatter. A lot of it was people equating the movie to something that should have been buried in cat litter.
“It’s fair to say that the launch of its first trailer had a–let’s say–mixed response,” said Adam Rubins of Way to Blue, the communications agency that works with Universal.
While it’s true that most people weren’t saying nice things, people were definitely talking about it. A lot. And as the saying goes, “There’s no such thing as bad publicity.” In a world where it’s getting harder and harder to cut through the noise and reach the masses, Universal definitely did that.
It’s been four months since then. None of us have forgotten about the odd mashup between real-life and computer-generated imagery that was the stuff of a madman’s fever dream.
As promised by the movie’s official Twitter account, a second trailer for Cats was released on Tuesday.
In the new trailer, we get to see Idris Elba sitting naked, save for some blurry CGI fur, on top of a giant plaster Egyptian cat. Yes, the same Idris Elba who was named People’s Sexiest Man of the Year in 2018.
Judi Dench is a terrifying orange cat covered in fur, but oddly enough, is wearing a huge fur coat, too. No one thought it might be weird to see an animal wearing the fur of other animals?
And while Taylor Swift’s singing is certainly a highlight, as the trailer shows off her new song, I can’t really see much past her character’s, uh… assets that move in a weird, unsettling way. She’s also a cat who wears high heels, but only on her hind legs.
Anyway, without further ado, here’s the second trailer for Cats, which is hitting theaters on December 20th.
