Every year since 1985, People magazine has selected the celebrity they deem to be the Sexiest Man Alive. This year, they picked an EGOT-winning entertainer and philanthropist.
Did People make the right choice?
“I was excited, but I was a little scared at the same time because it’s a lot of pressure,” John Legend told People. “Everyone’s going to be picking me apart to see if I’m sexy enough to hold this title!”
Break out the sparkle water, put on your bedazzled jorts (more on that in a minute), and celebrate, John! You deserve it.
Born John Roger Stevens, John Legend truly lives up to his stage name. He has won a pile of Grammys, an Oscar, and Golden Globe for his original song for the film Selma, a Tony for his work as a Broadway producer, and most recently an Emmy for producing Jesus Christ Superstar for NBC.
That means John Legend is one of the very few entertainers in history to claim the title of EGOT winner. He’s the first black man to have done so and the second youngest overall.
In addition, Legend works tirelessly to raise money and awareness for charitable causes. He’s also an outspoken supporter of women’s rights, stating: “All men should be feminists. If men care about women’s rights the world will be a better place.”
If that wasn’t enough, he’s also half of one of our favorite celebrity couples. Chrissy Teigen frequently gives her social media followers a peek at her life with Legend and their two young children, Luna and Miles. It’s really stinkin’ cute.
Chrissy reacted to the news that her hubby was 2019’s Sexiest Man Alive, writing: “my secret is out. I have fulfilled my dream of having boned @people’s sexiest man alive!! an honor!!!!!”
She followed up the saucy tweet with, “The kids…do not care.”
Over the past decade, People seems to have made an effort to branch out on their choices for the Sexiest Man Alive, including more men of color and looking beyond the biggest Hollywood box office stars.
(Incidentally, the Wikipedia entry on the history of the Sexiest Man covers currently lists “Donald J. Trump” for every single one since 1985. And that, kids, is why you never cite Wikipedia as a source when writing papers.)
Legend’s win also marks the third coach from The Voice to be named the world’s sexiest man… which seems a little suspicious, right? Adam Levine won in 2013, and Blake Shelton was honored in 2017.
Speaking of Shelton, Gwen Stefani couldn’t resist poking fun at her beau by taping up a poster-sized version of Legend’s cover outside Blake’s trailer. The country star laughed it off–and even presented his co-judge with a pair of bedazzled jean shorts with the letters “VEGOTSMA” in sparkles across the rear.
“You already came into this show as an EGOT,” Blake said. “Then you won The Voice so it became a VEGOT. Now you have a ‘VEGOTSMA.’ You’re the only one.”
