Rob Lowe Speaks Out on Sex Tape Scandal: “Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me”

Actor Rob Lowe faced a sex tape scandal that almost ruined his career, and now it’s finally resurfacing. But this time, it’s Lowe who is talking about it.

These days, sex tapes and social media can do wonders for a career. Just ask Paris Hilton, who had a certain scandalous video push her fame into the superstar realm. Or ask everyone’s favorite reality star, Kim Kardashian, who launched an entire career from her sex tape scandal.

Former Brat Pack Actor’s X-Rated Video Rocked Headlines and His Career

However, when Rob Lowe’s scandalous X-rated video made the news, it was 30 years ago. Things were a lot different back then, and the reaction was far less favorable.

Rob was a handsome and successful member of Hollywood’s infamous Brat Pack, a group of extra cool actors that were regularly chosen for all those coming-of-age films such as St. Elmo’s Fire and The Outsiders.

In the middle of his successful career, Lowe was caught on film with two girls in an Atlanta hotel room–and one of them was only 16 at the time.

Back then, a scandal like this was a career-ender. Once Lowe’s tape started circulating, his reputation was stained and he was considered untouchable.

After the scandal broke, Lowe put his career on pause, and later made his return on the small screen with the hit drama The West Wing. Now, Lowe is talking about that scandal–and how he doesn’t regret it.

‘The Best Thing That Ever Happened to Me’

In fact, the 55-year-old actor says of the sex tape, “I think it’s the best thing that ever happened to me.” But he doesn’t mean it in the way that you might think. Lowe admits that he “didn’t make any money off of it like every body does now.”

Instead, Lowe says that he is thankful that the whole incident happened, because it is what led to his sobriety. “It was one of the reasons I got sober,” he says of the scandal.

After deciding he needed help, Lowe ended up checking into one of the inpatient rehab centers in Arizona. He says that he ended up loving rehab and the 12-step program that he credits with saving his life. And now, Lowe says, “I haven’t had a drink or a drug since.”

“Sober got me married. I’ve been married 29 years and I have two great sons,” Lowe said in an interview, adding, “I don’t think any of that happens without going through that scandal.”

Lowe says he does have one regret about the whole thing, though: “That I didn’t wait 20 years later to do it where it would have helped my career. I was one billion percent ahead of the curve.”
