Robert De Niro is being sued by a former assistant who says he sexually harassed her, was verbally abusive, and gave her stereotypical female tasks. De Niro also recently filed a suit against the assistant for misbehavior at work and embezzlement.
Her Lawsuit Against De Niro
Graham Chase Robinson was hired in 2008 to be De Niro’s executive assistant. She says that the actor was hostile and called her sexist names such as “brat” and “bitch.” Robinson said this behavior was not unique to her because De Niro also referred to a female business partner as a “c***.”
Robinson says that the actor was frequently intoxicated and acted inappropriately around her, reportedly joking about his Viagra use and asking her to imagine him on the toilet. He would also allegedly urinate during phone calls and greet her wearing only a bathrobe. Other alleged mistreatment includes forcing her to complete demeaning, stereotypical female tasks like doing his housework. Robinson claims that none of this behavior was done to male employees.
One exhibit of the suit includes a voicemail where De Niro rips into her using strong language and insults when she didn’t answer the phone. Part of the message says, “You gotta be f**king kidding me, you spoiled brat! F**k you!”
The suit says that Robert De Niro “does not accept the idea that men should treat women as equals. He does not care that gender discrimination in the workplace violates the law.” The suit also claims that De Niro underpaid his assistant and refused to pay overtime.
De Niro’s Lawsuit Against Her
Robinson isn’t the only one to file suit in this relationship. De Niro filed a suit against the assistant in August with the claim that she binge-watched hours of TV shows like Friends at work and embezzled money from his company. The suit claims that Robinson spent over $12,000 at a fancy restaurant and paid $32,000 for taxis and Ubers using a company card.
However, Robinson claims that her boss was angry that she might sue him for his behavior so he moved to sue her first. Her lawyer says that the actor’s suit was an act of “retribution and intimidation.”
De Niro is suing her for $6 million. Robinson is suing him for $12 million for wage violations and gender discrimination.
