R. Kelly and his lawyer apparently think that it is unfair the singer can only visit with ONE of his girlfriends while he is in prison.
The disgraced singer is being held in a Chicago prison without bail on federal sex crimes charges, but the 52-year-old is also facing charges in New York on kidnapping, forced labor, racketeering, and sexual exploitation of a child.
However, this is not the first time that R. Kelly has been in trouble for sexual misconduct. Allegations of abuse, manipulation, and other crimes involving R. Kelly with girls and young women have been around for so long that they’re almost as old as internet service itself.
R. Kelly’s attorney, Steven Greenberg, has filed a motion in US District Court in New York arguing for a release on bond, asserting that the singer shouldn’t be held behind bars while awaiting his trial.
In the motion, the New York-based attorney complains that R. Kelly’s visitation privileges are “severely restricted,” because they only allow him to visit with one of his girlfriends at a time.
Currently, R. Kelly is only allowed one unrelated person to visit over a period of 90 days. His attorney argues that this is unfair to the singer, who was living with two girlfriends until he was put behind bars. It means that only one of the women who lived with him can visit, while the other has to wait for the 90-day period to end.
“No other friends or professional colleagues are allowed to visit. That is not right,” Greenberg argues.
In addition to complaints over the visitation privileges, the filed motion also states that R. Kelly should be allowed to post bond because he isn’t a flight risk and does not pose a threat to his alleged victims.
While the motion was filed in New York, R. Kelly is currently detained in Chicago. That means that even if a New York judge grants bond, a Chicago judge would also have to agree. Brooklyn U.S. District Judge Ann Donnelly is set to consider the motion on Wednesday.
