Nick Carter, formerly of the Backstreet Boys, and his younger brother Aaron Carter are in the middle of a public feud. And man, it’s getting nasty.
Picture, if you will, the 90s. Fans of the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC are fighting over which boy band is cuter. Also, everybody’s wearing crop tops and frosted lipstick. If you were a little too young to have a crush on Nick Carter (the Justin Timberlake of Backstreet), then you might have been into his little brother Aaron.
Aaron Carter released his first album at the age of nine and followed it up with two more smash hits. He was posing for Tiger Beat, touring with his big brother’s band, and popping up as a guest star in Nickelodeon. He dated Hilary Duff and Lindsay Lohan at the same time when both women were at the height of their fame. Aaron seemed to be on top of the world, but then something changed for the teen idol.
Like many kids who became rich and famous at a young age, by the time he hit his late 20s, Aaron Carter was a mess. He filed for bankruptcy in 2013, and it was revealed that he owed over a million dollars in back taxes. He was arrested multiple times on drug and alcohol charges, flirted with the idea of coming out as bisexual, and publicly struggled with his health and weight.
Although Nick Carter battled many of the same demons, he seems to be in a much more stable place than his little brother these days. Nick just filed a restraining order against Aaron this week–and things got even uglier from there.
The restraining order came after Aaron allegedly threatened to kill Nick’s pregnant wife.
“After careful consideration, my sister Angel and I regret that we were required to seek a restraining order against our brother Aaron today,” Nick wrote on Twitter. He said the decision was made because of their brother’s “increasingly alarming behavior and his recent confession that he harbors thoughts and intentions of killing my pregnant wife and unborn child.”
Although Nick wrote that he hopes Aaron “gets the proper treatment he needs before any harm comes to himself or anyone else,” his little brother is now legally prohibited from coming within 100 feet of Nick and his family. Aaron was also forced to surrender at least 2 of his guns to police, although he claims to have more–a lot more–at home.
Aaron brushed off the accusations, tweeting that he hadn’t even seen his brother in 4 years–and that now he wouldn’t ever bother to try again.
“I am astounded at the accusations being made against me and I do not wish harm to anyone, especially my family,” Aaron wrote. He also suggested that his brother was trying to get him placed on a psychiatric hold: “Stop trying to be 5150’d before I file a harassment suit myself nick I have the $”
Nick wasn’t done revealing dark family secrets–or possibly making up false accusations. He now claims that his sister Leslie, who died from a drug overdose in 2012, sexually abused him when he was a minor. Aaron previously claimed that he suffered from bipolar disorder, but now he insists that it was actually Leslie who was ill… and that she abused him throughout his childhood.
Aaron also dragged Paris Hilton into their feud, rehashing a rumor that Nick had hit Paris while they were dating in the early 2000s. Nick was also hit with sexual abuse allegations more recently, but no charges were filed since the statute of limitations had expired. Aaron made sure that no one could forget those accusations, repeatedly bringing them up on social media as their feud escalated.
Following Aaron’s appearance on the show The Doctors last week, where he claimed to suffer from schizophrenia, manic depression, and multiple personality disorder, police reportedly did a welfare check at his home. Although they allegedly intended to place Aaron on a psychiatric hold, he must have been able to demonstrate that he posed no immediate threat to himself or others.
However, this disturbing public feud plays out, I sincerely hope that no one gets hurt.
