In a shocking turn of events that brings a whole new meaning to the words “personal injury attorney,” A$AP Rocky’s former lawyer was shot in the head and chest last Friday morning.
Swedish lawyer Henrik Olsson Lilja was initially brought on board as part of A$AP Rocky’s defense team in the rapper’s assault trial. He was later replaced by Slobodon Jovicic. Now, before y’all get too excited, the attempt on Lilja’s life doesn’t appear to have anything to do with that case. Stockholm police currently believe that the shooting was related to a domestic incident.
Lilja was headed to work around 9 a.m. on Friday morning when an unknown gunman approached him outside his Stockholm apartment. The man wrestled Lilja to the ground and then opened fire, shooting Lilja in the head and chest, before speeding off in a black SUV.
Incredibly, Lilja called emergency services himself. He answered questions for the police even as EMTs helped get him to the hospital. Are all Swedes this tough, or is this lawyer a special case?
According to the Swedish Police Authority, law enforcement officers “have arrested several people for questioning. The investigation is at an intense stage and the police are working on several different fronts to make progress.” Those arrests include a female lawyer who had been barred from contacting Lilja. However, she was released on Monday and the hunt for the culprit continues.
As for Lilja, he is reportedly doing well and determined to make a full recovery. “He is still being treated in hospital and has had surgery. He is now awake and, under the circumstances, well and it is highly likely that he will fully recover. This is, of course, wonderful news to us,” said Björn Rothpfeffer, a partner at Lilja’s law firm. “Our thoughts are with him and his family.”
In addition to his legal work for the American rapper’s defense, Lilja also represented Qiao Jianjun, a Chinese fugitive who is suspected of embezzling millions of dollars.
A$AP Rocky’s camp hasn’t issued any official statements about the shooting. The last we heard from the rapper, he had just signed on for a high-profile collaboration with British musician Dean Blunt.
The rapper was found guilty during the assault trial but, given that he had already spent 3 weeks in jail, the judge ordered a suspended prison sentence as well as a fine of roughly $1400 to be paid to the victim.
After his release, A$AP tweeted:
“THANK YOU FROM THE BOTTOM OF MY HEART TO ALL OF MY FANS, FRIENDS AND ANYONE ACROSS THE GLOBE WHO SUPPORTED ME DURING THESE LAST FEW WEEKS I CANT BEGIN TO DESCRIBE HOW GRATEFUL I AM FOR ALL OF YOU THIS HAS BEEN A VERY DIFFICULT AND HUMBLING EXPERIENCE I WANT TO THANK THE COURT FOR ALLOWING ME BLADI AND THOTO TO RETURN TO OUR FAMILY AND FRIENDS THANKS AGAIN FOR ALL OF THE LOVE AND SUPPORT.”
