Last Thursday, Nicki Minaj dropped the bombshell news that she was retiring from music.
Now, she has apologized for her “abrupt and insensitive” tweet and promises to discuss the issue further with her fans. What’s going on with her?
In a since-deleted tweet, Nicki “Mrs. Petty” Minaj wrote:
I’ve decided to retire & have my family. I know you guys are happy now. To my fans, keep reppin me, do it til da death of me, [X emoji] in the box- cuz ain’t nobody checkin me. Love you for LIFE [Kiss, Heart, Unicorn]
But never fear–it doesn’t look like Nicki is sitting around Googling “what is the aarp” just yet. The news of her retirement appears to be exaggerated, or at least the cause for a “wider discussion.”
So what’s going on with Nicki? She’s engaged to Kenneth “Zoo” Petty and plans to tie the knot sooner rather than later. She swears that they’ve already picked up their marriage license, saying, “I’ll be married before my album comes out, but will have my wedding after the album comes out. Before the 90 days is over, yes, I will be married.”
Back in July, Nicki told us that she was planning on getting married and starting a family as soon as possible. On Chance the Rapper’s “Zanies and Fools” track, Nicki raps: “He the Clyde to my Bonnie, ’bout to walk down the aisle and be a mommy.”
Nicki is 36, so it’s understandable that she might feel like the clock is ticking when it comes to having kids. Her fans, however, have been very critical about her choice of man. Petty (40) is a convicted sex offender who spent 7 years in prison for manslaughter.
She also claims that he was one of her first loves and that they dated when she was 16–he would have been about 20 years old at the time.
Between criticism over her relationship with Petty, the fallout surrounding her older brother Jelani Maraj’s child rape conviction, and her ongoing feud with Cardi B, insiders suggest that Nicki just wants to get away from social media.
Regardless of whether you support the rap star, you have to admit that she spends a lot of time defending herself against attacks online.
After abruptly announcing her split on Thursday, Nicki seems to be reconsidering her words. The backlash was strong among her die-hard fans, who call themselves Barbz.
“I’m still right here,” Nicki replied to a distressed fan on Twitter. “Still madly in love with you guys & you know that. In hindsight, this should’ve been a Queen Radio discussion & it will be. I promise u guys will be happy. No guests, just us talking about everything. The tweet was abrupt & insensitive, I apologize babe.”
The word from TMZ is that Nicki has been working on new music in the studio, with more time booked in the near future, and even reached out to record collabs with other artists. That doesn’t sound like a musician who is poised to retire, does it? Her team certainly didn’t think so–they were reportedly as blindsided as the rest of us.
It seems most likely that Nicki will take an extended break from making music after she wraps her 5th studio album to focus on starting a family. That’s a lot less scandalous than running away from your career to play Bonnie and Clyde with a felon, though. Maybe Nicki just craves that drama?
