It’s the middle of August and Christmas movie trailers are already starting to drop, including the widely anticipated Last Christmas, by Universal Pictures. It stars Emilia Clarke of Game of Thrones fame and Henry Golding from Crazy Rich Asians. Not only that, it was written by Emma Thompson, the Oscar-winning legend.
So what could go wrong? Plenty, if you accidentally reveal the entire HUGE plot twist in the very first trailer released to the public. Warning, there are obvious spoilers included, so proceed with caution.
As the title of the movie suggests, the plot might be based on the incredibly popular ‘Last Christmas’ song by Wham! The problem is that the entire possible premise of the movie is revealed in the song’s lyrics, and the newly released trailer gives plenty of hints to lend credence to that theory – and it’s a bittersweet one.
Speaking of the song, although Wham! singer George Michael passed away in 2016 on Christmas Day (ironically), he was actually involved in the early planning stages of this movie. The movie also includes previously unreleased tracks from the band.
Okay, are you ready for the big plot twist reveal? It doesn’t take being a psychic reader to notice some pretty big loopholes that show up in the trailer below. First of all, the lyrics of the song say that “Last Christmas, I gave you my heart…” – and that’s the entire possible theme of the movie in a nutshell.
Why do we think that? If you watch the trailer, it shows that the character played by Emilia Clarke recovered from an illness that isn’t revealed. Why the mystery surrounding her condition? It seems pretty simple.
When Henry Golding’s character appears at various times throughout the trailer, notice that the only person he interacts at all with is Clarke’s character. No one else. Isn’t that a bit odd? That’s where the theory comes in.
What fans believe is actually taking place is that Golding’s character isn’t alive in those moments. They believe that ‘Last Christmas’, Golding literally gave Clarke his heart – as an organ donor, which could explain why she was so sick.
In other words, he’s basically the “Ghost of Christmas Past” who gave away his heart to someone truly special, even if she doesn’t quite realize it yet. I mean, she even calls him a Saint in the trailer.
Watch it for yourself and see if you agree:
