Kanye West is not one to shy away from controversy. He made big headlines when he supported Donald Trump in the 2016 election, but that might not be the strangest news to come out of his life.
Apparently, he recently shared with Nicki Minaj that he identifies as a ‘born-again Christian’ after a hospital stint in 2016 led him to find God.
In November of 2016, Kanye West for hospitalized for “stress and exhaustion” at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center in Los Angeles, California. He apparently had several very hectic days on tour and found it all overwhelming.
Just before he was taken to the hospital, his show ground to a halt when he rambled on into a mic, comparing himself to Donald Trump, criticizing other musicians, and overall acting odd. His hospitalization was not voluntary, but for his safety and the safety of those around him.
The rest of the tour dates that year were canceled, as West focused on his family and rebuilding his mental health.
West has only recently talked about his bipolar disorder diagnosis, but apparently, he received it when he was hospitalized then. He says that the moment he wanted to change was when he was handcuffed, drugged, and separated from his family during his emergency treatment.
He hasn’t spoken that much about his experience with inpatient rehab centers, but he did share in 2017 that he also struggled with opioid addiction that compounded his mental illness.
Nicki Minaj was hosting Queen Radio on Apple Music when she talked about her conversation with West. The topic was brought up because she was doing her show with Chance the Rapper, who recently went on a sabbatical to “learn the Word of God”.
Chance, whose real name is Chancelor Jonathan Bennett, said that he was raised to believe in God but had never “sat down” and read the bible. He took time to read the bible and connect to God in a more real way.
West has recently been hosting what he calls “Sunday Service”, which is a weekly church service with a rotating pastor selection. “Celebrity” pastors like the man who wed West and his wife, Kim Kardashian, are regular speakers.
Minaj went on to say that the difference in West was noticeable and that she was “so proud” of how far he’s come and the progress he has made. She described it as a “peace” that he has, which she attributed to coming from God.
She went on to add that she couldn’t imagine dating an atheist, and told the story of how she said someone who told her they did not believe in God scared “the living hell” out of her.
West has also started remixing and recording worship and gospel tunes with other artists. Snoop Dog has also been exploring his love of God and released an R&B gospel album in 2018. The track Blessing Me Again won the 2019 Dr. Bobby Jones Best Gospel/Inspirational Award.
