One of the biggest names in rap sat down recently with none other than 2020 presidential candidate Bernie Sanders. Though his latest campaign collaborator may be someone you least expect, there’s clearly a key demographic they’re targeting.
Cardi B teamed up with the democratic hopeful, and no, it wasn’t to make a video for her latest single.
The unlikely pair instead shot an interview at TEN Nail Bar in Detroit where they talked politics and equality. It’s currently unclear whether Cardi and Bernie also got manis and pedis together while at the posh nail salon.
Cardi does not like giving up her hard-earned cash, so you know she’s got to have one of the best tax attorneys in the nation. However, her gripes are less about being taxed and more about where her money is actually going.
It’s clear she’d rather it be used to help people who are less fortunate. With that in mind, it’s not surprising she’s a fan of Sanders.
Several days prior to her post about their video, she mentioned on Twitter how she felt about the previous election. She said that she was reading about the Vermont senator and was “sad how we let him down in 2016.”
Appearing on Jimmy Kimmel Live! last week, Sanders said he knew Cardi. He also mentioned that he had spoken to her several times on the phone.
“She is really smart, and she is deeply concerned about what’s happening in this country,” he said of the Invasion of Privacy rapper. He also went on to mention her “humble background” and experience with living in poverty.
Sanders added that he’s “delighted” to have her as a supporter.
And why shouldn’t he be?
He recently told CNN that America’s future “depends on young people.” And Cardi definitely has a lot of reach when it comes to the younger demographic.
It’s clear that both Cardi and Bernie seem driven to inspire more young people to get involved in politics.
“Not me, US,” the rap superstar posted on Instagram, captioning a photo from the video shoot with her and Sanders. In her post, she thanked him for sitting down to talk with her about his visions for change.
Additionally, Cardi noted that she’d asked her followers to help provide questions they’d want to ask “a democratic candidate.” She said she chose some of the most popular to ask.
Though the video is not yet out, she teased its future release, telling her fans to “stay tuned.” The video, she suggests, will show young people what Sanders has planned for the country should he win the presidency.
“LETS LEARN OUT CANDIDATES!” She exclaimed in all caps, after suggesting young people form a movement “to transform this country.”
