What little girl didn’t want to be Barbie when she grew up? Barbie was always smiling, had a handsome boyfriend who loved her (Ken was a total catch, guys), great cars, vacation houses out the wazoo… Barbie was really living her best life.
Well, now an actress is going to have the chance to live that dream. She was just announced as the star (And co-producer!) of the live-action Barbie movie set to release in the first half of next year. No word on who Ken will be, but we’re excited to see what happens.
So who is the lucky lady? It is none other than Margot Robbie, most recently known for her role as Harley Quinn in other movies.
When asked about how she was feeling on playing such an iconic role, she said that she was very excited to “put some positivity out in the world” and she looked forward to the chance to be “aspirational” for young kids everywhere.
Barbie has no shortages of film credits to her name. Since 2001 there have been a staggering 36 Barbie movies released, but all of them have been animated so far.
Margot is set to be the first real-life Barbie that has hit the big screens. Life Size is the closest thing we have gotten, but that wasn’t a Barbie brand movie – just a flick about a doll who comes to life.
It’s possible that this is because if Barbie were actually real, her proportions would be so hysterically off that she couldn’t walk… but more than likely it just hasn’t happened yet because of more practical reasons. You can still expect to see an uptick in the best weight loss program for gaining those Barbie thighs when it releases, though.
The movie itself has been in talks for several years, and the original release date was in June of 2017. That obviously didn’t come to pass. At the end of 2016, it was announced that Amy Schumer was cast as the plastic star, but that ended up falling through due to ‘scheduling conflicts’. In late 2017 Anne Hathaway was rumored to be in talks instead, but that also didn’t pan out.
For quite a while it was looking like Barbie would never see her screen time.
Finally, Warner Brothers stepped in and said they would distribute the film. After Hathaway backed out, Margot Robbie jumped at the chance to play the star. LuckyChap Entertainment Company will be co-producing the movie, which Robbie owns with her husband Tom Ackerley and their production partner, Josey McNamara.
Greta Gerwig is in serious talks to direct the film, though there is no final word from Warner Bros yet. Gerwig is a big up-and-coming name, and in 2017 she wrote and solo directed Lady Bird, which won a Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy.
Besides running a production company with her beau and planning her plastic paradise, Margot has a lot on her plate. Birds of Prey, where she reprises her Harley Quinn role, is set to release next year. According to IMDB, she has also finished filming the next Suicide Squad movie. She has a role in Ruin about post-WWII Germany, though it doesn’t have a release date yet, and she has at least two more Quinn roles set for the next few years.
Margot first played Harley Quinn, the Joker’s demented girlfriend/sidekick/lackey in the 2016 movie The Suicide Squad. She also played Tonya Harding in 2017, showing just what kind of range this actress has. Jumping from evil Batman villain to murderous figure skater, and then hopping over to perfect-life Barbie would be difficult for any star. We’ll have to wait and see if Robbie can pull it off.
