Last week Nicki Minaj broke her three-month social media blackout with new information on upcoming music.
Today she has finally released the video for her brand-new song ‘Megatron’, ushering in what might be the party song of the summer and a new era of Minaj music domination.
Calling it ‘Racy’ probably doesn’t do the video justice, which features Minaj in a variety of outfits and settings, including several tiny string bikinis. She is seen with a muscle-bound man in a sauna and a pool, and several clips show him groping her, holding her to his chest or standing in suggestive positions. Nicki has never been one to shy away from controversy or her own sexuality, and given the lyrics to the song, no one should be surprised by the video.
A keen eye will notice there is very little product placement in the video itself. Many popular artists like Minaj will take money from companies to feature their products – new Samsung Galaxy phones and Beats headphones are very popular right now in videos – but the only real placement that is seen is her own brand of Moscato, MYX. She even references the alcohol in her lyrics, saying “I own my own Moscato, b****, we getting’ drunk-drunk”.
If you feel like Minaj just released a CD, you’re not wrong. Her fourth studio album Queen came out August of 2018, meaning that it has been less than a full year and she is already putting out new music. The time between the release of The Pinkprint and Queen was four years. Many artists pace themselves more, giving more time to tour or create. Not Minaj, who jumped into the studio full force.
While Megatron is Nicki’s first new solo music this year, she has been featured on a number of other tracks by big name artists, including an interesting collaboration with Avril Lavigne and a popular hit with Chris Brown.
Nicki also toured this year, doing 19 shows on her The Nicky Wrld Tour. She started in Munich, Germany at the end of February, and finished her tour at the end of March in Geneva, Switzerland.
There’s little question that this is going to be played to death in clubs and beach parties this summer. Lyrics like “it’s better when I’m drinkin’ / I tune up when I’m drinkin’” really fits the summer vibe, and the music itself makes you want to move.
I think we can expect to hear this hit from Minaj, not just this summer, but at parties and clubs for years to come. It’s the quick return of the music we all expect from Nicki Minaj, and the hit has gotten fans even more excited for a studio album to follow.
No word yet when we can expect it.
