While the new Ghostbusters sequel was officially announced months ago, there’s been a lot of speculation about the film.
Will the original cast reprise their characters from the first two films? Will it even acknowledge the 2016 remake featuring an all-female ghostbusting team? What sort of plot can we expect?
Luckily, several of our most pressing questions have now been answered.
We now know that Annie Potts and Sigourney Weaver will be back in their original roles. Therefore, there’s a strong chance we can safely assume that Dan Aykroyd, Ernie Hudson, and Bill Murray will as well.
With Ghostbusters II being 30 years old, we do imagine a lot will have changed. How the new cast members will be included has also not been revealed.
According to a brief synopsis of the film, however, the plot involves a family returning to their small-town home. There, they’ll “learn more about who they are and the secrets of the town itself.” We don’t know yet how these characters will tie in with the original, reunited cast.
Notably, the teaser features Ecto-1 resting in a barn.
As for director Paul Feig’s rather poorly received 2016 Ghostbusters remake, the new sequel seems to ignore it exists entirely. Considering the reception it generated, diehard fans of the original films likely won’t miss the women ‘busters.
The upcoming sequel to the 1980s films is slated to hit theaters in 2020. While the trailer does not mention a specific opening date, we do expect it’ll be a summer blockbuster. Additionally, IMDB lists a release date of July 10, though that may or may not be accurate.
