Hatfield and McCoy. Joseph Stalin and Leon Trotsky. Katy Perry and Taylor Swift. All important, public feuds that have ended relationships, friendships, and even lives. (okay, probably not the Swift Perry one, but still)
But today we got word that the famous Taylor Swift, Katy Perry feud that has gone on since AT LEAST 2014 has come to a close.
Katy Perry shared on her Instagram a plate of what appears to be chocolate chip cookies (Homemade? Probably) with the words ‘Peace At Last’. In case there was any uncertainty on what she was talking about, Perry marked the location as ‘Let’s Be Friends’, with the caption, ‘feels good [heart] @taylorswift’.
This feud went on for a long time, at least for Hollywood standards. And while we don’t know the exact moment that they went from friendly to enemies, the public has a pretty good guess.
In 2009, Perry and Swift were for-sure friends, because there are pictures of them talking and laughing on the red carpet. Sometime between 2009 and 2013, Taylor Swift is rumored to have been seeing John Mayer, who is 12 years her senior. Sometime after they reportedly split, Perry shared a picture of her and Mayer canoodling on her Instagram, and paparazzi information indicated they were probably seeing each other.
Most think this was the start of the “bad blood” between the two stars, but there is no official word from either party. In 2014 it all went down, though.
If you think back five years, you’ll remember that this is when Swift was becoming a major player in the music scene. She was selling out huge shows, doing a world tour, and putting on massive productions. Halfway through Swift’s ‘the Red Tour’, a world tour for her new album at the time, Perry started looking for dancers for her own tour.
Taylor’s 3 backup dancers were previously part of Katy’s dance crew on her last tour, and while it is unclear if Perry approached them, or they approached Perry, the result was the same – the dancers left Swift’s tour halfway through with little notice, almost ‘ruining’ the Red Tour.
Later, when Swift released ‘Bad Blood’, she shared with the Rolling Stones that the song was about another female pop star that “basically tried to sabotage an entire arena tour”, hiring people from under her. She said it made them “straight-up enemies”. Since then, Perry has also released a song about the matter, ‘Swish Swish’.
In 2018 we saw the first glimmer of hope from the girls when Perry sent Swift an actual olive branch in hopes to bend the relationship. The cookie picture, which fans believe was taken in Swift’s own kitchen, is the final puzzle piece of this mending relationship.
With both artists working on new music, we are all hopeful to see a potential collaboration from the two soon!
