It looks like there’s a new show featuring everybody’s favorite animated shark family coming to Nickelodeon. Yes, we’re talking about the one from that insanely popular earworm everyone just loves to have stuck in their head.
“Baby Shark, doo doo doo doo doo doo!”
Can’t stop singing it now, can you?
The kids’ programming giant just announced that they’ve cut a deal to make the YouTube sensation into an animated series.
They’ll be working with South Korean educational entertainment company SmartStudy, also known as the outfit behind the ultra-successful Pinkfong! children’s content brand.
Pinkfong! itself boasts more than 19 million subscribers on YouTube. And, of course, their viral hit Baby Shark, which debuted in 2015, is now closing in on 3 billion views. In fact, it’s one of the top ten most viewed videos on the platform. Heck, the song even broke into Billboard’s Hot 100 chart – and stayed there for 20 weeks.
With numbers like those, it should come as little surprise that any network would be interested in Pinkfong!’s content.
There’s no denying how popular Baby Shark has become either. Even celebrity parents like Kylie Jenner, Chrissy Teigen, and Cardi B have posted on social media about the tune. EGOT winner John Legend even posted a video of him singing it with his and Teigen’s daughter Luna.
Considering its popularity, plenty of insiders have also been watching and waiting to see what might develop. Now, we know exactly which network managed to score the rights to work on a cartoon – and we’re not surprised.
Nickelodeon seems like a perfect fit, and Min Seok Kim, CEO of SmartStudy, agrees.
Kim said his company is “excited to be partnering with Nickelodeon to co-produce” the series. He also added that they “look forward to bringing our characters from the screen into the real world.”
“At the heart of any popular piece of content is a terrific character,” explained Nickelodeon Animation Executive Vice President Ramsey Naito in a statement.
Naito went on to explain how the network has “a great opportunity to further explore the world of Baby Shark and follow this family through some great animated adventures on Nickelodeon.”
Is it a parent’s worst nightmare or a toddler’s dream come true? Perhaps it’s both.
While the network has offered few other details about the project, the target audience appears to be preschoolers. Additionally, they’re apparently already moving to get products associated with the series into retail stores as quickly as possible. Think lunchboxes, backpacks, apparel, plushes – all the things your little one will just have to have.
Currently, a premiere date has not yet been announced, but it definitely seems like they’re in a hurry to make this happen.
