Earlier this year, Rihanna confirmed plans to release her ninth studio album. However, it might have a somewhat different sound compared to her previous releases.
Recently, the 31-year-old Barbadian singer sat down for a chat with playwright Jeremy O to discuss the future. Featured in the New York Times’ T Magazine, the interview covers all sorts of exciting ventures. They, of course, include Riri’s upcoming fashion line with LVMH – as well as her next LP.
While there’s no release date yet, we do have a bit more information – including a likely title. Plus, it seems she’s been looking to her roots for inspiration and it will, in fact, be a reggae album.
While it’s all but confirmed, it appears the title for her forthcoming album will very likely be R9.
“So far it’s just been R9, thanks to the Navy,” Rihanna said, referring to her fanbase. “I’m about to call it that probably, ’cause they have haunted me with this ‘R9, R9, when is R9 coming out?’ How will I accept another name after that’s been burned into my skull?”
Jeremy O suggested the title would be “a gift to the fans who have been hungry for it.”
Rihanna admitted, “that would be cute.”
Not only did she confirm certain details about her new reggae album, she also put several rumors to rest.
First of all, contrary to some beliefs, she has not been planning to work on anything with Lady Gaga.
“Maybe because she followed me on Instagram,” Rihanna said. “It’s not in the books right now, but I’m not against it.”
Nor does she have plans to work with Drake this time around either.
“Not on this album, that’s for sure,” she said of the possibility of a collaboration with the God’s Plan singer.
So, there you have it. Rihanna’s doing a reggae album, tentatively titled R9, and it seems it won’t include Drake or Gaga, unless something changes.
