After the epic, multi-country wedding of Nick Jonas and Priyanka Chopra, we expected Joe Jonas and Sophie Turner to find an even more memorable way to tie the knot. And they did–but not in the way we were expecting!
On Wednesday night, after the Billboard Music Awards, Joe and Sophie jetted off to Las Vegas for a surprise wedding. And yes, they were married by an Elvis impersonator.
Sophie and Joe were introduced by a mutual friend back in 2016. Like his older brother Nick, Joe slid into his future bride’s DMs. By 2017, the couple was officially engaged. But no one predicted they would run off to Vegas!
The pair chose Chapel L’Amour at A Little White Wedding Chapel for their surprise wedding. And instead of expensive jewelry, Sophie and Joe traded Ring Pops. Thankfully, their friend Diplo streamed the whole thing to Instagram Live, so we were able to get a peek at the quirky ceremony.
Joe’s brothers were there, along with their spouses. Priyanka and Sophie are really close, and it was so sweet to see them exchange a big, sisterly hug at the altar. The wedding was also attended by a handful of friends who were in town for the Billboard Music Awards.
After their quickie wedding, the new Mr. & Mrs. Jonas were serenaded by Dan + Shay, who did a stripped-down acoustic version of “Speechless.” We also spotted Khalid in the audience!
Despite now being legally married, Sophie and Joe are planning a bigger, more lavish ceremony in France this summer. Unfortunately, France has very strict residency requirements for people who want to get married there, and it would have been tricky to ensure that their wedding was legal. Hence the quick trip to the Chapel of Love.
Like her new sister-in-law, Priyanka, Sophie will be taking her husband’s name. The actress has built quite a resume under the name Sophie Turner, but she probably won’t have any trouble finding work even with the new moniker. Sophie has been killing it as Sansa Stark on Game of Thrones, and we will straight-up be devastated if her character doesn’t make it.
Best wishes for the happy couple! But I sincerely hope that the rest of us aren’t supposed to plan multiple wedding ceremonies now. One wedding is difficult enough, even without costume changes and exotic destinations.
Justin Bieber and Haley Baldwin have been planning a second, much bigger ceremony for a while after their quickie wedding. Is this officially a trend?
