It’s almost time for fashion prom–AKA the Met Gala. The annual event brings out the biggest stars on the planet for a night of haute couture. But this year’s theme promises to be the tackiest, campiest gala in history.
The Met Gala’s theme this year is “Camp: Notes on Fashion,” inspired by a 1964 Susan Sontag essay. That piece is credited for bringing the idea of camp into the mainstream. She described it as a “love of the unnatural: of artifice and exaggeration.”
The Head Curator of the Costume Institute, Andrew Bolton, said that “what is often dismissed as empty frivolity…can be actually a very sophisticated and powerful political tool, especially for marginalized cultures.” Those cultures include the drag scene, which has often embraced campiness.
So will we be seeing A-listers decked out like contestants on RuPaul’s Drag Race? Well, considering that the Met Gala is co-hosted by Lady Gaga this year (along with Harry Styles), we can expect some audacious and costume-y choices.
Every year, the gala’s theme is supported by an exhibition at the Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Costume Institute. The display includes outfits that made a big splash on the celebrity gossip landscape.
Katy Perry’s 2014 Moschino outfit, where she dressed up like a McDonald’s mascot, will be there. So will the vintage Mugler outfit Cardi B wore to the Grammy’s this year–the one where she looked as though she was hatching out of a classic black evening gown.
The exhibition features one of the most iconic Oscars dresses of all time, a gown that has topped worst-dressed (or at least weirdest-dressed) lists for almost 2 decades. Yup, Björk’s infamous swan dress will be there!
You can bet that Katy Perry already has her outfit lined up. She might be the campest figure in pop culture today. Kim Kardashian West is a regular, but she may be studying for a law exam that night. Rihanna almost always shows up in the best, most over-the-top look of the night. Remember last year, when she showed up dressed as the sexy pope of a new religion?
Other regulars include Blake Lively, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Zendaya. Priyanka Chopra has developed a reputation for major fashion moments at the gala in recent years–although she might be exhausted after her 3-month wedding celebration. And although the men on the guest list often stick to more understated looks, you know Jared Leto is going to have fun with this theme.
The event takes place on May 6 this year, with guests arriving at 7 pm. You know we’ll be covering it, so be sure to check out our Met Gala mega-post the next day!
