Find Out Why Rihanna Is Suing Her Father for Millions

It seems like basic common sense: Don’t mess with Rihanna. But apparently, her own father didn’t get the memo.

Fenty to Go Around

Under the brand “Fenty,” Rihanna released an incredibly successful line of inclusive makeup and the Savage X Fenty lingerie line. She was recently spotted wearing a fierce pair of sunglasses emblazoned with the brand’s logo, hinting that she’s going to expand into accessories soon.

All of which is to say that the Fenty brand is big business. It also happens to be Rihanna’s last name–courtesy of her father, Ronald Fenty. Despite reportedly asking him multiple times not to use the family name for his own business dealings.

Major Lawsuit

However, Ronald reportedly tried to trademark the family name (it’s already been TM’ed by Rihanna, of course) in order to launch his own line of luxury resorts in their home country of Barbados. He also allegedly solicited loans from foreign investors to the tune of millions based on his connection with Rihanna.

His company “Fenty Entertainment” boasted of ties to the mega-famous singer in order to entice investors. And now Rihanna has finally had enough.

On Tuesday, she filed a $75 million lawsuit against her father. The official paperwork of the suit claims that Ronald and his business partner, Moses Joktan Perkins, must “cease and desist all activity and efforts to exploit Rihanna’s name and the goodwill associated with the Fenty brand.”

False Advertising and Invasion of Privacy

According to the suit, Rihanna’s legal team is pursuing Ronald Fenty for false advertising as well as invasion of privacy. Ronald’s entertainment company allegedly tried to sell a 15-show Latin American Rihanna tour to investors… without actually telling his daughter about it.

That happened in 2017, so Rihanna seems to have given her father plenty of time to mend his ways.

That’s probably why the suit uses such strong language to describe how Ronald and his partner “egregiously and fraudulently misrepresented to third parties and the public that their company, Fenty Entertainment, LLC, is affiliated with Rihanna, and has the authority to act on her behalf.”

A History of Conflict

Rihanna and her father have had a tumultuous for years. In 2011, she told Vogue that her dad betrayed her by selling “a bunch of lies” to the media after her ex Chris Brown assaulted her. “He never called to find out how I was doing, if I was alive, nothing. He just never called. He went straight to the press and got a check.”

However, Rihanna also told Oprah that despite Ronald’s behavior during her childhood–including domestic abuse and addiction–she still considers him “one of the best fathers in the world.”
